I want to write about a fifteen year old young man who has made an impression on me. Although I am unsure how to spell his name, we called him Tune Tune. He is what I would have called a key player to this entire experience. He was very smart, and because of this, much responsibility was placed on him during my stay.
Tune Tune spoke both Mandarin and English and often served as our translator in many situations. When we would go out into the city he was the one that helped us get around and communicate with different people. He did not always feel comfortable doing so, but he did it nonetheless. This was very impressive because it showed great maturity. The weight of that pressure, I believe, was what allowed him to grow and mature as quickly as he had been able to.
When we are under pressure, we learn a lot about ourselves. This pressure can sometimes be the difference of why some people succeed and some people do not. This pressure is needed for everyone and the more we subject ourselves to it, the more opportunities we provide ourselves to grow. People who often settle, or avoid the pressure will more than likely lose these opportunities.
If we can learn something from Tune Tune, it’s this; It takes a strong person, a focused person, to move forward in the midst of being uncertain, uncomfortable or unfamiliar. Here is where true character is developed. My challenge for you is the next time you are approached with a challenge that may cause you to feel like Tune Tune, accept it and find out for yourself what areas you may be able to grow in.
