I remember one week, I had been working pretty hard and was looking forward to having the weekend off from Kung Fu training. That is what we were told initially. Then it all changed.
On Friday, a few ex-military bodyguards came to our training facility where we were staying to train with us for ten days. We were told that during those ten days, there would absolutely be no days off. My mind was tired, my body ached and I was angry. I tried to make light of it and laugh through it but that ended rather quickly.
During Saturday’s training, we were in the full swing of things and I was fatigued. I remember thinking, “I know we are not done and there is more to come. But how am I going to make it through?” I realized in that moment that I had a decision to make. I was either going to get frustrated or get focused. So I decided to lean into it and give more than what I believed was possible.
The very next day I had a similar experience with the Tiger Palm Strike exercise. This is an exercise where you use the palm of your hand to strike your opponent. You typically do this while in partners while someone is holding a punching mitt. Something clicked during the middle of the exercise and I began to see that I could do it better and faster. Just like the day before, I gave it one more boost of energy and for the first time I started to make the connection of channeling my inner Chi (my unique energy).
