I have spent an exhausting last few weeks in self-examination and conducting self-inventory. I never have spent so much time getting to know me. What I discovered is I, as I am, am my own entity. Aside from the roles that have been laid out for me, I as Matthew Garcia have a place to exist. Before all of this personal examination, the reality was I was losing myself.

Respect The Art (rapper, song writer, recording artist), Hand­-Ability (graphic designer), Uno (studio engineer, producer), Matthew Garcia (business owner, author, producer) are all associated as identities I wear because of what each entity does. What I was starting to take note of is that these are only things that I do, they are not who I am. So who is Matthew Garcia? Who am I when every title or label is stripped from me?

I am a beloved child of God. I can simply rest in this and for the first time in my life, I can simply just be. Not worry about anything I do and having this define me, but truly just be. I cannot speak for everyone but in my own experiences, discovering I am a beloved child of God through my faith has helped me tremendously. The Bible states that I was loved first. In the midst of all my sin and past decisions, God loved me first. I was created with a purpose.

If I did not start to examine a deeper rooted truth concerning my identity, the burdens of life would have continued to distract me from being able to realize this truth for my life. I would have allowed the world I lived in to continue to create a person I thought I should be rather than identifying who I already am. Being who you are is something that should be understood, not something you should try and create. 

When I can simply be, I am my own entity. As my own entity, the importance of task and their priorities are more clearly defined. I am no longer drowning in what I do because knowing who I am helps me to determine what it is I should be doing. My personal being is not defined by anyone's opinion, grade, score or any type of performance review. There is assurance and peace in knowing my value as a person. I am a distinct and independent being in existence. I am an entity.
