I don’t know about you, but traveling takes a lot out of me. It requires much more physical, mental and emotional energy than my typical day-to-day, yet it also offers intangible and priceless rewards, hence my constant disregard for the aforementioned exhaustion. I’m no stranger to getting sick while on the road or shortly after a trip, so I’ve made it a point to focus on taking care of myself. Here are a few easy tips to do the same:
Dehydrating flights and long nights out are rough, so make it easier on yourself by storing a water by your bed. Your non-hungover-self will definitely thank you in the morning. Regardless of your night’s activities, make it a habit to chug a few gulps of water each morning to jumpstart your digestive system and metabolism.
Think ahead and be prepared
Pack a DIY wellness kit! My essentials include: vitamins (I recommend C, B12, D and multivitamins), allergy pills, ibuprofen, Pepto Bismol tablets, Tums, cough drops, hydration tablets or packets (e.g., Gatorade, Nuun, etc.), hand sanitizer, vaseline and melatonin. These items are bound to boost your immune system and help you keep any oncoming sickness at bay.
Know when to relax and eat your veggies
Channel your inner health-conscious self and make it a priority to take care of your body while on the road. Sleep in and take naps. Go to the market and buy a bunch of fruits and vegetables. Find a cafe and splurge on a cold-pressed juice with ginger. Prioritizing your wellness on the road is always a worthy investment.
Life is exhausting and sometimes there just isn’t a way around it. How are you feeling? When’s the last time you took moment to pause and reflect on your health? Is there a way that you can invest in your well-being? Try scheduling a massage, listening to a meditation on YouTube or treating yourself to a juice cleanse. You deserve it.
