One day during training, I got scratched in the face pretty good. I had taken a few ringers before, but that day was special. It comes with the territory I guess. That was the day I earned the nickname “Pacino,” because they said I reminded them of Al Pacino’s character in the movie Scarface.

Once this happened, Master started to speak to us about the moves we were doing. He was talking about when we are in a fight, we must forget everything and do what we see fit. Clearing your mind before battle is a major component to the Kung Fu philosophy. He shared that it will not always be as it is in practice, especially a street fight. He then offered this wisdom:

“Don't doubt, but don't be superstitious.”

I believe what he meant by this was to not doubt the moves you have learned and if it doesn’t work the first time, do not doubt that it won't ever work. He also wanted us to make sure that we were not naive in thinking superstitiously that these moves would work every time. The common ground to balance both sides is in your will of resistance; to never settle, to never back down simply because of what you may think. If I settled, I would have never made it to china!

If you can understand this concept for what it is, both in combat and life, you will exceed even your own expectations.

Talk soon & God bless,
