Debt is not wisdom. I know modern society has taught us that debt is the best tool available to obtain the life we desire. Pass the facade of the American dream, the reality is jobs do not pay well and colleges have become financial traps. I am not knocking the education system at large, but I am very much criticizing the business structure of higher education in America. Starting life as a graduate owing someone else a car or house payment is CRAZY! Graduation ceremonies are a graveyard for this next generation’s dreams. How are graduates suppose to pursue their calling or life's work when they cannot obtain a job in their field and have student loans hovering over them? Often times this forces graduates to take what is available so they can start to make the minimum payments on their loans. Unfortunately, many people then become trapped in a field that has nothing to do with what they went to school for. I never wanted to be one that sits and complains about an issue and does nothing. I knew I had to do something. I decided to focus my frustration on a plan to get out of debt. I knew I needed to become better educated about management over my own finances. One resource that helped me is a class called Financial Peace University written by Dave Ramsey, author of Total Money Makeover. I am not getting paid to endorse Ramsey or any of his products. I simply used his products and agree with the insight Ramsey offers. I share this with you today because I want to help those who are looking to help themselves. Until people can accept being debt free as a lifestyle and manage a new way to live, many needs will never be met. If you truly have a desire to help others, you need to learn to help yourself and take responsibility over your finances. I am not saying living a debt free lifestyle is easy, but most things worth pursuing never are. It does come with great sacrifices, but not stressing over owing people money has proven to be it’s own reward. I am no longer embracing death over the next 12-24 months at a 26.99% interest rate.
